Govan's Brigade

— Liddell's Division —

Warren Mississippi Light Artillery.
2 Napoleons, 2 James.
Govan's Brigade, Liddell's Division, Walker's Corps.
September 19, 1863.
1st Lieutenant H. Shannon, Commanding.
2d Lieutenant W. P. McDonald.

This battery was also known as Sweet's Battery. It was actively engaged with the enemy at Alexander's Bridge about 2 p.m., and crossed at Byram's Ford in the evening of the 18th. It followed the Brigade and Division in their charge at 11 a.m. of the 19th, but owing to their rapid advance, sweeping Baird's Division from their front, the Battery was not engaged till the Brigade was falling back, when it took position in rear and opened on the enemy checking his advance. About 3 p.m. the Battery again took position on the right of the Brigade and opened on the enemy for a short time, but was compelled to fall back to the base of the ridge for protection from a Confederate Battery firing too close to the line. In the advance of Cleburne's Division about dusk the Battery again came into position on his right and rear on this ground and shelled the enemy's rear by direction of General Lucius Polk for half an hour. On returning to the Brigade the Battery hauled from this position one caisson and three limbers and bivouacked.
