320 East 43rd Street
— New York City Designated Landmark —
Built during 1963-67 to serve as the headquarters for one of the nation's largest private foundations, the Ford Foundation Building is one of the most widely admired examples of modern architecture in new York City. In a radical departure for modern architects at the time, Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo Associates carefully considered the context of the surrounding neighborhood, and the Tudor City complex in particular, while planning the building's design. The resulting building is an innovative, elegant, and transparent glass cube just twelve stories tall, framed in exposed cor-ten steel and mahogany-colored granite. The designated interior atrium, with its lushly planted garden visible from both the street and offices, is one of the city's most memorable public spaces.HM Number | HM2JQQ |
