Born at Port Shoreham, N.S., educated at Guysborough Academy and at McGill, Tory served as professor at McGill (1893-1905), Principal of McGill College, Vancouver (1906-7), first President of the University of Alberta (1908-28), and founder and President of Carleton College (1942-7). A distinguished scientist, he was the Chairman and subsequently President of the National Research Council (1923-35), President of the Pacific Science Congress in 1933 and of the Royal Society of Canada in 1939. Throughout his life he demonstrated his commitment to the spread of scientific knowledge and international good will. He died in Ottawa.

Tory, natif de Port Shoreham, étudia à l'Académie de Guysborough et à l'université McGill. Professeur à cette derniere institution de 1893 à 1905, et directeur du collège McGill de
Vancouver de 1906 à 1907, il fut président de l'Université de
l'Alberta de 1908 à 1928, et fonda Carleton College en 1942. Il
fut président du Conseil national de recherches, du Congrès
scientifique du Pacifique et de la Société royale du Canada.
Toute sa vie, il travailla à la diffusion de la science etsa la
détente



internationale. Il est décédé à Ottawa.
