The Rivière-Bleue train station is a legacy from a dynamic period in the recent history of the Transcontinental region. From 1908 to 1914, the village of Rivière-Bleue bustled with railway construction activity. This ambitious public works project gave needed boost to the economic and demographic growth of the community, providing industrial infrastructures and above all, a communications link with the outside world.
By 1914, the Rivière-Bleue train station was already

a major hub for the region, handling the many cargo and passenger trains passing through Rivière-Bleue. Like the general stores of the times, the train station soon became a local gathering place where villagers waited impatiently for the arrival of the next train. As soon as it was heard coming down the track, onlookers would crowd onto the platform. This is when train stations worked their magic. In Rivière-Bleue, the station was like a theatre with the railway workers and passengers as actors, and the local residents as spectators.
The popularity of train travel progressively declined during the 50s in favor of automobiles. The train came to be seen as an outmoded and expensive means of transportation. Railway companies and government authorities gradually neglected the network and dropped some lines. Although the Rivière-Bleue train station closed in the 70s, there is another chapter to its story.
In 1982, after five years of efforts, a crafts club called Le Riverain acquired the station to save it and operate it as a local crafts workshop. This group project was piloted by Bibiane Landry Gagnon, who managed to convince government authorities of the need to save this proud vestige of the past.
