In 1845-46, Edgar Allan Poe resided near this site in a house built in 1835 for Judah Hammond. It was here that Poe wrote "The facts in the case of M. Valdemar", "The Sphinx"' and began "The Cask of Amontillado"' as well as the "Literati of New York City". The current façade is an interpretative reconstruction.
