Murray Harbour began to achieve status as an important PEI port in the late 1700s. The earliest settlers in the area sustained themselves by fishing and farming but John Cambridge, the proprietor of Lot 64, was actively creating new industries to exploit abundant natural resources. He built ships in the South River as early as 1789 and shipped lumber and livestock to Newfoundland and later to England. He brought in workers from England to harvest wood and operate mills. Wharves were built, roads connected mills to the waterfront and a drawbridge across the South River allowed passage for smaller ships. Shipyards were established also at Beach Point and Murray Harbour North.
With a significant population for the time, commercial interests later focused upon the fishing industry, particularly lobsters and herring, but also potatoes. Merchants established trade connections in the West Indies and Cuba, bringing back molasses, fruit and the 'occasional' keg of spirits. Lobster and fish processing plants sprang up at several locations as the industry expanded and a cannery offered an alternative to salt fish.

The 1880 Atlas of Prince Edward Island indicates two general merchants operating in Murray Harbour plus two forges, a carriage shop, a harness shop, a lime kiln, a tannery and a shoemaker. A starch factory, opened in 1885, relied heavily upon the port to ship the product up and down the seaboard.
Coastal shipping between Island ports became an active enterprise by the middle of the 19th century. Murray Harbour was a regular weekly stop for the steamer Electra, followed by the Enterprise in the early 20th century, on their routes between Georgetown, Charlottetown and Pictou. Photographs record a busy harbour full of local fishing schooners and merchant vessels. Coal, coming largely from Sydney, became a significant import when the railway depot was established in Murray Harbour in 1905. It arrived at the wharf and was hauled in horse-drawn carts to an eight hundred ton storage building kept stocked for the steam trains, until their demise-in 1948. Murray Harbour continued as one of the busiest ports on the east end of the Island well into the 20th century. A federal freight shed was built near the wharf for agricultural produce, including eggs, which were shipped mostly to Cape Breton and Newfoundland.
All through the decades in good and tough times, fishing has been and still is an industry that sustains the community. The ground fishery was strong until destroyed

by draggers in the 1950s and 1960s. In the last 25 years, lobster has been the principal catch landed at local processing plants and the port continues to be well filled with working vessels. Residents sometimes refer to the community simply as the "Harbour"; certainly an apt description of a long heritage.

aussi vers la culture de la pomme de terre. Les commerçants établirent des liens commerciaux avec les Antilles et Cuba, en rapportant mélasse, fruits ainsi que l' « occasionnel » baril ale spiritueux. On vit apparaître des usines de transformation du homard et du poisson en plusieurs endroits, au fur et à mesure que l'industrie prenait de l'expansion et une usine de mise en conserve du poisson permit d'offrir un produit autre que le poisson salé. L'Atlas de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard de 1880 révèle qu'il y avait deux marchands généraux à Murray Harbour, deux forges, un fabriquant de voitures, un harnacheur, un four à chaux, une tannerie et un cordonnier. Une amidonnerie ouvrit ses portes en 1885, usine qui dépendait fortement du port pour expédier ses produits le long de la côte.
Le cabotage entre les ports de l'Île s'est transformé en une entreprise active au milieu du dix-neuvième siècle. Murray Harbour était au nombre des arrêts hebdomadaires du vapeur Electra, suivi, au début du siècle, de l'Enterprise, sur leur trajet entre Georgetown, Charlottetown et Pictou. Des photographies attestent de l'achalandage du port rempli de goélettes de pêche locales et des navires marchands. Le charbon, en provenance surtout de Sydney, est devenu une importante importation lorsque la ligne de chemin de fer s'est rendue à Murray Harbour en 1905. Le charbon arrivait au quai où il était

transporté en charrettes tirées par des chevaux vers un entrepôt de huit cents tonnes pour ensuite alimenter les locomotives à vapeur, jusqu'à ce que ces derniers disparaissent, en 1948. Murray Harbour est demeuré l'un des ports les plus occupés de l'extrémité est de l'Île pendant une bonne partie du vingtième siècle. On a construit un hangar à marchandises près du quai afin d'y entreposer des produits agricoles, dont des œufs, qui étaient expédiés principalement vers le Cap-Breton et Terre-Neuve.
Au fil des décennies, par périodes de vaches grasses et de vaches' maigres, l'industrie de p pêche a été et est encore l'industrie qui fait y vivre la communauté. La pêche aux poissons de fond y était forte jusqu'à ce que les chalutiers la détruisent, dans les années 1950 et 1960. Au cours des 25 dernières années, le homard a été la principale pêche à alimenter les usines de transformation locales et le port demeure rempli de bateaux de pêche en exploitation. Les résidents appellent parfois leur communauté le « Harbour » (le port), et c'est certainement une description tout à fait appropriée de son long patrimoine.
