A gifted lawyer, legislator, and judge, this Father of Confederation helped pave the way for Nova Scotia's reluctant entry into the new Dominion. He was a member of this colony's legislature and served as solicitor general (1864-1867) before acting as a delegate to the London Conference in 1866-1867, which finalized the terms of the federal union of the British North American colonies. After championing Confederation in the Legislative Council, Ritchie was appointed to Canada's first Senate and later served on the Nova Scotia Supreme Court before retiring to his estate, Belmont, in 1882.

Avocat réputé, législateur et juge, ce Père de la Confédération favorisa l'entrée dans le nouveau Dominion de la Nouvelle-Écosse qui était jusque-là hésitante. Il fu membre de la législature et solliciteur général de sa colonie (1864-1867) avant de prendre part à la délégation néo-écossaise à la conférence de Londres en 1866-1867, où il aida à finaliser les conditions de l'union fédérale des colonies de l'Amérique du Nord britannique. Ardent défenseur de la Confédération au Conseil législatif,



il fut nommé au premier Sénat du Canada, puis à la Cour suprême de Nouvelle-Écosse avant de se retirer en 1882 à Belmont, son vaste domaine.
