"previous to our departure saw a large herd of the Bighorned anamals on the immencely high and nearly perpendicular clift opposite to us; on the face of this clift they walked about and bounded from rock to rock with apparent unconcern where it appared to me that no quadruped could have stood." (sic) Captain Meriwether Lewis, July 18, 1805

As the Corps of Discovery was preparing to leave this area, Captain Meriwether Lewis made an observation of the resident bighorn sheep. He was astounded at how they traversed on a narrow ledge but did not fall.
Bighorn Sheep are still in the area and you may observe one on the cliffs. Bighorn Sheep were new to Lewis and Clark. The captains took time to record these "new" animals in their journals.
