After the occupation of Hilton Head,a civilian town grew up to serve theneeds of the large Union base andits garrison here. The town boasted a hotel, a theater, 2 newspapers, andnumerous stores, centering along a street, officially Suttlers Row, whichran east from this point about ½ mileto the army tent encampment.
