A brick wind?mill near here was close to the south?ern limit of a line of British redoubts erected in March 1781 by order of Brigadier Gen?eral Bene?dict Arnold, who under Major Gen?eral William Phillips, com?manded British troops occu?py?ing Portsmouth. This line of for?ti?fi?ca?tions extended north in an arc along Wash?ing?ton Street to the water?front near Court Street.
