Bennett and James McCoy, free men (probablybrothers) from Westmoreland County, wereamong the many African Americans whoserved in the Virginia militia and the UnitedStates Army or Navy during the RevolutionaryWar. Bennett McCoy served for three yearsstarting in 1777, participated in several majorbattles, and reenlisted with the 15th VirginiaRegiment until the end of the war. James McCoyrendered guard service on the Potomac Riverfrom 1777 to 1778. In 1781, he was drafted andstationed on the York River at Yorktown andacted as a bowman to assist "his captain"in navigating the river. Each of the McCoysreceived a pension for his service.
