During the War of 1812, on 7 Aug. 1814 tenBritish ships and smaller vessels appeared onthe Coan River, which flows into the Potomac.The invaders sent three barges to capturethree American schooners situated within twomiles of Northumberland Court House. TheLancaster County militia repulsed the attackuntil British reinforcements arrived. Beforeleaving, the British seized the schooners anddestroyed property at Northumberland CourtHouse. On 4 Oct. 1814, two British detachmentsof 3,000 infantry invaded NorthumberlandCounty from the Coan River. After initiallyresisting, the outnumbered militia retreated.The British captured ammunition, arms, andpersonal property before debarking.
