In 1669 and 1670, German-born John Ledererled three expeditions to explore Virginia'sPiedmont and the Carolinas that encouragedfurther European exploration. The thirdexpedition began nearby at Robert Talifer'shouse near the Rappahannock River on 20Aug. 1670, Col. John Catlett, "nine Englishhorse," and five Indians accompanied Lederer.They reached the junction of the RappahannockRiver and the Rapidan River two days laterand followed the former inland. At the river'sheadwaters they approached the Blue RidgeMountains and reached the summit of one ofits peaks on 26 Aug. From there they viewedthe Shenandoah Valley, then returned thesame way they had come.
