Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America and party camped near here in a wooded area, when trying to reach Mobile, in his flight from Federal Soldiers. The party, on horseback, stopped at Warthen's Store to purchase food supplies for man and beast and were directed to a secluded spot, on what was then known as Griffin's Pond.

From here President Davis and his party proceeded to a point in Irwin County where they were overtaken by Union soldiers and captured.
