Albert Terry Wright (1871-1944) was born inHanover County, Virginia. He taught in theblack schools of Richmond and, by 1908, atWhite Stone in Lancaster County. By 1921Wright was principal of the county's firsthigh school for blacks, which was constructedlargely with funds raised by black residents.Named in his honor. A.T. Wright High Schoolserved black students until 1959 when thecounty opened Brookvale High School. Thehistory of the man and his school exemplified the struggle for education by Virginia'srural blacks.
