An Episcopal church, built in 1757, formerly stood one-eighth of a mile east of here. According to tradition, a detachment of Rochambeau's army wintered here after the Battle of Yorktown, and seventy French soldiers were buried in the church yard. Francis Joseph Mettauer, father of Dr. John Peter Mettauer, served in this unit as a surgeon.
