James R. Law (1885-1952) was the founder of Law, Law, and Potter, an architectural firm that designed many buildings and homes in Madison. Law was appointed mayor in 1932 and was re-elected for 5 terms. In 1943 he resigned to become chairman of the State Highway Commission. The Monona Lake frontage was named to honor his plan to establish a new shoreline 200 feet out from the original shore. The area was later filled and developed into parkland by the city.
