Enterprise Mill

Until the Enterprise Mill was builtAugustans were not sure that the 1875enlargement of the canal had workedto attract industry.
The 1848 granite block building at thecanal end of this complex is a formerflour mill and the only remainingindustrial structure which was built on the original 1845 Augusta Canal.
After enormous public investment toenlarge the canal in 1875, local residentsbecame worried when two years passedand only one additional mill had opened,a small one at that.
However, the importance of the AugustaCanal to local industry and the economybecame evident with the constructionof the Enterprise Mill in 1877. Built andcontinuously operated as a textile millinto the 1980's, it was the first largescale mill to use the increased waterpower created by the enlargement ofthe canal. Huge turbines within thebowels of the complex continue to generate electricity from hydropower, even though operations ceased yearsago.
The Enterprise Mill is one of the best preserved examples of the SecondEmpire style in American industrialarichitecture, with its characteristicconvex-curved Mansard tower roofs.
With success of the Enterprise Mill, seven other cotton mills followed in the next decade, enabling the city to be ranked top producer of textilegoods in the South by the turn ofthe century.
