Inscription
"In 1779 4,000 prisoners, British and their German auxiliaries, captured at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, marched over 600 miles to quarters, called 'The Barracks', situated a half mile north of this site. Traditionally, some of these prisoners who died were buried near this memorial marker, which was placed here by the Albemarle County Historical Society in 1983 to mark the presence of the British and 'Hessian' prisoners during our American War of Independence."
