Drainage canal constructed between 1845and 1863 by slaves of General Nathan BryanWhitfield, builder of Gaineswood, to preventwater from overflowing and flooding hisplantation. The water from 2,070 acres southand east of Gaineswood originally followeda 17 mile course to reach the TombigbeeRiver. The canal, approximately 1 mile longin some places more than 30 feet deep, quicklydiverts this surface water into the riverat Demopolis.
