1862

On August 5, 1862, Confederate Divisions of Generals Charles C. Clark and Donald Ruggles under General John C. Breckinridge attacked Federal forces of General Thomas Williams among the tent camps of the 21st Indiana and 7th Vermont Regiments. Williams was killed near here. His troops fell back to positions nearer the Mississippi River reinforced by Federal gunboats.
