In 1933 local residents assisted in the creationand donated 2,000 acres of land to Virginiafor the establishment of a state park in SmythCounty along Hungry Mother Creek. Theunusual name comes from the legend of anearby Indian settler conflict that resultedin Molly Marley and her child being captured.They later escaped but Marley died. When asearch party found the toddler who couldonly utter the words "Hungry Mother." TheNational Park Service and the CivilianConservation Corps, in conjunction with theVirginia Conservation Commission, developedthe park as a New Deal project. It openedon 15 June 1936 and was one of the first sixstate parks established in Virginia.
