Shenandoah Valley circuit-riding preacher PaulHenkel formed Mount Tabor Lutheran Churchabout 1785, several miles to the east. It shared alog building with St. John's, a Lutheran andReformed union congregation. Under the directionof David Frederick Bittle, the Mount Tabor con-gregation moved here in 1838 and built a brickchurch within the current cemetery. In 1842 Bittleand Christopher C. Baughman organized apreparatory school for boys in the churchparsonage about a mile west. The school becamethe Virginia Collegiate Institute in 1845. It movedto Salem in 1847, where it became RoanokeCollege in 1853. Construction of the presentchurch building was completed in 1889.
