Mayor William A. Courtnay House
circa 1840

The construction of this circa 1840 three-and-a halfstory single house is attributed to Charlestoncotton planter and factor Theodore D. Jervey.The house was built in the Greek Revival stylebut was altered in 1886 by William Ashmead Courtenay who purchased the house in 1870.Courtenay added a two-story projecting bayand triple windows to the front facade. He alsomodified the parapeted gable roof to create anItalianate bracketed roof overhang. The originaltwo-story piazza and rear kitchen building remain.
???William Ashmead Courtenay (1831 - 1908), aprominent cotton shipper and publisher, was mayorof Charleston from 1879 - 1887. During his tenurehe modernized the city government, renovatedcity hall and built public parks, fire and policestations Courtenay is best rememberedfor his leadership in rebuilding the cityafter the hurricane of 1885 and the earthquakeof 1886. In 1888 the City of Charlestonplaced a bust of Courtenay in City Hall.
