Br. Aust, the first potter in Bethabara, moved his business to the new central town of Salem on June 17, 1777. He took down the addition to the Potter's Shop, in order to move the woodwork. Three other significant potters—Christ, Krause, and Butner—continued the Bethabara pottery trade until 1872, although at different locations than this.

"There was an unusual concourse of visitors, some coming 60 or 80 miles, to buy milk crocks and pans in our pottery. They bought the entire stock, not one piece was left; many could only get half they wanted, and others, who came late, could find none."
Bethabara Diary, May 21, 1770.
