Castelnau
The Old City of Albi was first known as Castelnau or "new town" in distinction to Castelviel - the original site of the city at the start of the Middle Ages. It developed during the 12th and 13th centuries between the Cathedral of Staine-C?cile to the north and the fountain of Verdusse to the south. With the approval of the city's three ruling forces - the Count of Toulouse, the Bishop of Albi and the Vicount Trecavel - the neighbourhood grew. The regular layout of the streets shows intentional organization of space, an can be seen in the straighter and wider rue Saint-Clair and the rul de la Croix-Blanche.Today, Vieil Alby is one of the best-restored neighbourhoods in the old centre-town, featuring well preserved houses in the traditional Albi style and stunning views of the cathedral of Saint-C?cile and the Saint-Salvi collegial church[Spanish translation not transcribed.]
