This date marks the 400th anniversary of the naming of Monterey Bay by Gen. Sebasti?n Vizca?no, commissioned by Don Gasp?r Z??iga y Acevedo, Count of Monte Rey. Near this place, called Acasta and Hummukul by the Ohlone/Constanoan Esselen Nation, Fr. Andr de la Ascensi?n, Fr. Antonio de las Ascensi??n and Fr. Tom de Aquino, three Discalced Carmelite friars on the Vizca?no expedition, celebrated the first Mass in Northern California.
