The Cavalry Corps arrived in McLemore's Cove from the rear of LaFayette and the vicinity of Summerville and Alpine via Lookout Mountain and Dougherty's Gap, September 17th, McCook's Division in advance. The Corps was actively engaged throughout the battle in defending the fords on the upper Chickamauga against Wheeler's Cavalry and protecting the right of the Army. It occupied Crawfish Springs the evening of the 19th, and successfully held the enemy's cavalry back until 5 p.m. of September 20th when Mitchell began to fall back through Chattanooga Valley, having been joined here by Post's Brigade of Davis' Division from Stevens' Gap at noon, taking off all trains and all wounded from the hospital here who could be moved. During the 21st the corps was in line of battle all day across Chattanooga Valley, north of McCullough's Mill and south of Rossville, frequently skirmishing with the enemy's cavalry.

On the morning of the 22d, it was withdrawn to Chattanooga, a portion of McCook's Division covering the rear and successfully resisting several sharp attacks.
