Location Description | When the State of Minnesota declared that the walleye was the state fish in 1965, Garrison, being on Mille Lacs, one of the state's best walleye lakes, declared itself to be the Walleye Capitol of the World.
15 years later, this giant walleye that had been on a float in a parade was put on a pedestal and placed in the New Deal-era Garrison Concourse Wayside.
It was greenish to begin with, but was painted the current coppery color in about 2008. The Inscription telling the "legend" of the giant walleye wasn't put on until about 2011.
It stood in the middle of the Garrison Concourse from 1980 to 2014, but was moved in 2014 during an extensive restoration project to a place just off of the SW corner of the concourse. |
