This high-performance, submarine-launched weapon is considered to be the first successful torpedo developed for use against other submarines. The Mark 37 was designed to swim out of a 21-inch torpedo tube, to which it remained attached by a length of wire. The wire allowed the torpedo to be "steered" to the target from inside the submarine. The Mark 37 was also equipped with a sophisticated homing system which utilized both active and passive sonar. Several versions of this torpedo saw service in the U.S. Navy from the late 1950's through the early 1980s before being replaced by the more advanced Mark 28.
Weight-1,700 lbs.; Length-13.5 feet; Diameter-19 inches.
