The country estate of
financier Thomas Fortune Ryan
and his wife Ida Barry Ryan
was built in 1901, replacing
an 1860s structure of
stockbroker David Groesbeck.
This 44-room mansion
contained a private chapel,
two bowling alleys and
electric elevator. The
philanthropics of the Ryans
included development of
Suffern's fire department
and buildings for Good
Samaritan Hospital and
Sacred Heart Church.
Mrs. Ryan resided here until
her death in 1917.
