War Memorial Tower
The War Memorial Tower is Massachusetts' official commemoration of its war dead. Dedicated in 1933, it is made from slabs of Quincy granite that weigh as much as 8 tons; the evocative epigrams are from First World War-era poets. The summit's extreme weather conditions have led to many restoration efforts. In 1974, the state entirely rebuilt the tower.
1840: the first Greylock tower was a weather observatory, put up by Williams College students in 1831; they also built this second version in 1840.
1885: Visitors paid 10 cents to climb the third tower, built of iron.
1932: Awaiting its globe-shaped beacon, the tower that remains standing today is nearly complete.
