Wyoming's Wildlife
The pursuit of wild places and naturally occurring wild things brings people from all over the world to northwest Wyoming.Jackson Hole lies within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) which is one of the largest natural ecosystems remaining in the earth's mid-temperate latitudes. The GYE covers over 14 million acres, 93 of which is public domain. Over six million acres of the ecosystem is designated as wilderness. Over 1,700 species of plants and 300 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish are found in the GYE. Threatened, endangered and rare wildlife species include the bald eagle, peregrine falcon, whooping crane. Kendall Warm Springs dace, grizzly bear, common loon, and trumpeter swan. Even in this vast ecosystem, competition for habitat and space between humans and wildlife is evident. With human use of natural resources increasing, it is vitally important that impacts on wildlife habitats are carefully considered. If free-ranging populations of wildlife are to survive and be a part of future generations, their habitats need to be enhanced and protected.Abundant wildlife, natural wonders, and expansive wilderness have always allured and enchanted the human spirit. We hope your well-being will be strengthened by your visit to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.HM Number | HM1O6Q |
