One of Hays City's earliest post offices was in Evans' grocery store. Here on June 23,1869, clerk A. B. Webster, afterwards mayor and marshal of Dodge City, shot and killed Joseph N. Weiss. Joe was proprietor of the local Omaha Saloon, a former inmate of the Kansas State Penitentiary and recent deputy U.S. Marshal. Weiss and Sam Strawhim threatened Webster because he had ordered them to leave town, but Webster was not to be bullied. Strawhim escaped only to be killed three months later by "Wild Bill" Hickok, Sheriff of Ellis County.
