On December 28, 1867, Charles DeCropper shot and killed Cornelius Doyle in the corner doorway of Henry P. Fields Star Restaurant, which stood on this site. Fields later sold the lot to Miss Ida May, who turned it over to Jim Curry. Alleged slayer of several men in Hays City, including nineteen-year-old Ed Estes, who had taken a shine to Curry's girl. Curry lost the restaurant in 1870 in a lawsuit filed by John F. "Jack" Wright. By 1871 the building was a saloon run by Henry "Lon" Kelly. In a ruckus on July 16, Sheriff Peter Lanahan was fatally wounded by Bill Harris, Tommy Drum's bartender. Before he died, Lanahan killed Harris.
