Born in the tenement and raised on these streets of West Hoboken - (Union City), Pietro di Donato would later go on to pen the classic novel CHRIST IN CONCRETE in 1939. On Good Friday, 1923, di Donato's bricklayer father was killed in a building collapse in lower Manhattan. As a result, young Peter was forced to leave school in the seventh grade to support his mother and seven brothers and sisters. Picking up his father's trowel, he became a master mason by the age of seventeen. This is the story of Christ in Concrete. He never forgot his West Hoboken childhood and often relived it in short stories, articles and his 1960 novel Three Circles of Light. His writings paint a vivid and accurate vision of life on these very streets in the early 1900s - di Donato's definitive narrative of the people of West Hoboken.HM Number | HM1TTU |
