In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, French and English traders competed and clashed in the region. In 1763, at the end of the French and Indian War, the land was ceded to the English. The United States acquired the area following the American Revolution. Ohio was included in the Northwest Territory, created in 1787, and became a state in 1803.

1669-Explored by LaSalle for France 1788-Permanently settled by American fur traders 1803-Admitted to the Union as the 17th state.
