Roger Williams established the first settlement at Providence in 1636 with a group of followers from Massachusetts Bay Colony who sought freedom of worship. Portsmouth and Newport were founded in 1638 and 1639. In 1643, Warwick was established by Samuel Groton and subsequently a parliamentary patent was obtained uniting these four settlements. King Charles II granted the unified colony a charter in 1663, which guaranteed complete religious liberty.

1524-Explored by Giovanni da Verrazano for France 1636-Permanently settled by the English 1790-Admitted to the Union as the 13th state.
