Joel Perkins was an ambitious young man looking for
riches. Perkins arrived in Oregon in 1844 at the age
of 23 with his mother, father, and four siblings. In
1851 Joel followed wagon tracks from the Willamette
Valley to one of the best spots to cross the Rogue
River. This location is approximately one mile
upstream from this marker, where Fruitdale Creek
enters the Rogue River. Mr. Perkins established a
ferry business and general store near this site. The
Perkinsville Ferry was used by many traveling from
the Willamette Valley area in search of gold. A
settlement, Perkinsville, grew up along the banks of
the Rogue River. Perkinsville and other settlements
were abolished in favor of Grants Pass in 1885.
