It is believed this unique brick structure was built shortly after Elmwood Cemetery was established in 1867. Newspaper accounts from 1892 verify that the vault was used for temporary storage of bodies awaiting interment.

In 1999, Richard H. Brown and Jacob M. Osbourn began a community service project to restore the vault to its original appearance. Thanks to their volunteer service and the generosity of other local citizens, the restoration was completed in 2002.
