Hezekiah Barnes, a U.S. militia captain turned road surveyor, strategically located his inn and trading post in Charlotte on opposite sides of the main stage route from Montreal. Built in the Georgian style, the exterior of the inn features symmetrically spaced windows flanking a central door with sidelights, and a broad wrap-around porch.
