Got a crush on you....

In 1881, 52 men worked in the mill with the different machinery and refining processes. Imagine the noise generated by the numerous pounding stamps and other machinery as it crushed and processed the ore. Each month, more than 300 cords of wood were needed to fuel steam engines that powered the mill.

Stamp mills were noisy and awkward but used for many years because the were easy to move and erect on wooden frames, cheap to operate and repairable by a blacksmith. The General Custer Mill operated up to 20 1,000-pound stamp mills that crushed the ore as fine as flour.
