The DeLord House, 1810-1913, A Social Hub During the War of 1812 La maison Delord 1810-1913: bastion de la vie sociale Durant la guerre de 1812 In August 1810, Henry and Betsey Delord purchased the house they would enlarge and their family would occupy for three generations. The home became a social center, especially after the outbreak of war in June 1812, when the conflict brought a series of notable military men and their wives to Plattsburgh. Operating from one of the outbuildings, Delord and his friend William Bailey sold a wide range of goods. In mid-August 1814, several weeks before the British invasion, General Macomb pleaded with Bailey an Delord to extend credit to officers and soldiers, assuring the merchants that they would be repaid as soon as the men were paid. Before the Battle of Plattsburgh, Henry and his family fled their house, which was then occupied by British officers. After the Americans won the battle, Delord and Bailey went into debt in order to sell to the troops on credit. Imagine their surprise when the soldiers were either discharged and sent home or reassigned to military posts all over the country. The dispersal of the troops presented the partners with a daunting problem: how to collect the $20,000 of unpaid bills. When Henry Delord died in March 1825 at the age of
60, his claims against the government were still outstanding. Despite continuing efforts by Betsey and William Bailey, the debt was never repaid. Henry Delord's personal finances were devastated by his willingness to extend credit to American soldiers and sailors on the eve of the Battle of Plattsburgh. Among the acquaintances of Plattsburgh hostess Betsey Delord were Thomas Macdonough, Zebulon Pike, George Izard, and Alexander Macomb. Thomas Macdonough returned to Plattsburgh for a visit in the fall of 1822 and presented the Delords with this portrait painted by George Freeman. Betsey buried this silver service in the garden before the British arrived and recovered following their retreat. When the British officers retreated, one of them forgot his tea chest. En automne 1822, Thomas Macdonough retourna à Plattsburgh pour une courte visite et offrit aux Delords cette peinture crée par l'artiste George Freeman. Betsey enterré ce service de thé en argent dans son jardin avant l'arrrivée des troupes que les Britanniques et le récupéra après leur départ.
