The DeLord House, 1810-1913, A Social Hub During the War of 1812 La maison Delord 1810-1913: bastion de la vie sociale Durant la guerre de 1812 In August 1810, Henry and Betsey Delord purchased the house they would enlarge and their family would occupy for three generations. The home became a social center, especially after the outbreak of war in June 1812, when the conflict brought a series of notable military men and their wives to Plattsburgh. Operating from one of the outbuildings, Delord and his friend William Bailey sold a wide range of goods. In mid-August 1814, several weeks before the British invasion, General Macomb pleaded with Bailey an Delord to extend credit to officers and soldiers, assuring the merchants that they would be repaid as soon as the men were paid. Before the Battle of Plattsburgh, Henry and his family fled their house, which was then occupied by British officers. After the Americans won the battle, Delord and Bailey went into debt in order to sell to the troops on credit. Imagine their surprise when the soldiers were either discharged and sent home or reassigned to military posts all over the country. The dispersal of the troops presented the partners with a daunting problem: how to collect the $20,000 of unpaid bills. When Henry Delord died in March 1825 at the age ofHM Number | HM22WJ |
