This 1800 pound bell was cast by the Clinton H. Meneely Bell Co., Troy, New York for installation in the Hersey Memorial Building (Old Bangor City Hall) where it was dedicated on July 4, 1894.
At the dedication each councilman pulled the bell rope to have the bell ring 1-8-9-4. The ceremony was followed by a large parade. The bell rang the time of curfew until 1952 when its use was discontinued because of structural weakness in the bell tower.
In 1969, when the Old City Hall was demolished, it was removed from the tower and in 1974 it was placed in this location.
