The International Monetary Fund (IMF) promotes cooperation among its member countries on monetary and economic matters. The IMF was established at a conference held at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, on July 1-22, 1944. Nearly all countries of the world are now members.

The cornerstone to the right of the entrance marks the three stages of construction of this headquarters building. Behind it are two time capsules, one from the 1958 headquarters building and one sealed in 1995. The cornerstone of the earlier building is located to the left.
