“Places of Negotiable Affection”

You're looking at one of The Dalles' "Places of Negotiable Affection."

By foot, wagon canoe and horseback, "civilization" took root, and with it the need for certain services - lumber, horses, foodstuffs - and of course, the comfort of "ladies of negotiable affection."
Many such ladies were housed in local watering holes until prohibition changed the way business was conducted. Then the word was:
"Knock twice and tell'em Joe sent you!"

The tale of the sisterhood can never be told in its entirety. The ladies traveled lightly, often preferring to leave their true identities and pasts behind them. These Places of Negotiable Affection were to please customers, not historians.
