Tenleytown, DC
—Country Village to City Neighborhood —
In the 1700s and 1800s Tenleytown's origin as a crossroad generated numerous commercial activities, such as tobacco trade, farms, dairies, and slaughterhouses, along with the "Tennallytown" Tavern. Murdock Mill Road led from Tenleytown to an early grain mill. A Masonic Lodge was started in Tenleytown and the building still stands today in the 4400 block of Wisconsin Avenue. The early 1900s saw the establishment of small "mom and pop" stores such as Scholl's Pharmacy (pictured here) which was located in the historic structure at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Grand Road.HM Number | HM24BC |
