James Mcallister was born in 1809 in Kentucky and practiced law in New Orleans until moving to Thibodaux in 1838. He was elected as the city's first mayor, serving for one year, after which Mcallister became Parish Judge. In that capacity, he notarized the building contract for St. John's Episcopal Church on September 28, 1843. Mcallister never married and died in New Orleans in 1846. His body, buried in Half-Way Cemetery between Thibodaux and Houma, later was moved to St. John's Historic Cemetery.
