Born on Prince Edward Isl., Canada, Mackenzie graduated Queen's College, Kingston, Ontario, with two degrees. He then earned a doctorate with high honors in Divinity and Philosophy at Glasgow University, Scotland. After ordination in the Church of Scotland in 1883, he served churches in Scotland and England. For reasons of health, he returned to Canada in 1886. From 1901, Mackenzie taught various disciplines at the Episcopal Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and at Nobles University and Gakuin Seminary, Tokyo, Japan. After he was ordained an Episcopal Priest in 1902, Rev. Mackenzie ministered in California and Michigan. In 1911, he and his wife Hannah and children Maurice and Helen moved to Thibodaux, where he not only served St. John's but Trinity Morgan City until his death in 1926. The community's respect and affection were such that for his funeral, most major businesses in Thibodaux closed to allow the townsfolk to attend.
