Space Shuttle Program

—Space View Park —

The first group of
astronauts selected for the
Space Transportation System
(STS) Program
began training in 1978.
This group of men and women
Followed in the footsteps of
the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo,
Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL)
Skylab and
Apollo/Soyuz (ASTP) astronauls
They were known as
"TFNG"
("Thirty Five New Guys")
As a testament to NASA's selection
and training process, all members
of the TFNG flew at least one
